Pocket NES (Nintendo)
What’s better than DOOM on your Windows Mobile Smartphone? Why, all your favorite Nintendo games! Pocket NES is a Nintendo emulator for Smartphones.
- To install Pocket NES, download and install the CAB file.
- Copy your favorite ROM files (Google “Nintendo ROMs download”, or check out RomNation.net) to your Windows Mobile Smartphone.
- If you have a storage card I suggest making a Folder on it and copy all your ROMs into it.
- Launch PocketNester
- Open Start > Games > PocketNester
- Select File > Open Rom > Browse to the locate of your ROM files on your Device/Storage card
- OR -
- Open the File Explorer application on your Windows Mobile Smartphone (Start > Applications > File Explorer) and navigate to the folder containing your ROM files.
- Select the ROM file of the Nintendo game you would like to play and press the D-Pad select button.
- Presto - Nintendo on your Smartphone. Life doesn’t get much better.

I apologize for the screen shot, I had to use my digital camera - my screen capture software wouldn’t work with it. The colors are much better in real life.
Here are a couple tips to get you started:
- By default, hit “S” to pull up the Pocket NES menus.
- To get back to the game from the Pocket NES menus, go to File > Resume.
- By default, the controls are:
- D-PAD moves (up, down, left, right)
- “O” is Button A
- “P” is Button B
- “G” is Select
- “H” is Start
- You can change the controls by:
- Hitting “S” to get to the Pocket NES menus
- Selecting “Options”
- Selecting “Controllers”
- Assign new key values for the different NES controls.
Note: You will not be able to download ROMs directly to your smartphone using PocketIE (Mobile Internet Explorer). PocketIE supports very few mime-types/file extensions for download and ROM files aren’t included. I suggest using Opera Mobile to download the ROM files directly to you Smartphone, or download them to your computer and copy them over to your Smartphone using ActiveSync/Bluetooth/etc.
Disclaimer: Please verify the legality of any ROM file you download - some ROMs may be legal to download, others may not be.

Works like a charm! Thanks!
How are you mapping your keys? Just curious what a good layout would be for the up/down/left/right and a/b buttons.

Awesome!!! I like it. I have bought a few games from the web. Does anyone know how I can share them with you guys?
May 24th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Hi guys I install the games when I go to play them i have no controls, games will not work using the key pad
May 24th, 2008 at 9:40 am
heylewis,
I added some more information to the post - i think it will help you out.
May 24th, 2008 at 9:42 am
thank you
May 24th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Judge, i don’t know the copyright status on each game — I assume if you had to purchase the games the publishers don’t want you to distribute them.
If you know that the games you have a free to distribute, you can send them to my e-mail (see footer) and i can post them to the site if they’re good.
Either way, we all appreciate sentiment!

brian,
As keymappings go, I like the default mappings for directional controls (D-Pad) and A/B Buttons. I tried using:
W = UP, A = UP, S = DOWN, D = RIGHT … but it wasnt as smooth as using the D-Pad. I have switching the key that pulls up the Pocket NES menu to me “M” though.

Hello,
Works great!
Does anyone know how to adjust volume? I have it muted, because the games are so loud. Also, it has been suggested on other sites that overclocking will help game performance. Has anyone tried this?
Thanks…

Hi, how can i save the game during my play. I mean i press the S key and i scroll down to Save State but then when i try to find where i saved (load state) i cant find it… please help
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Just save it where it defaults to. It won’t show any of the other games unless you have other games saved. It kills me how I have this high-tech device, yet i’m back to playing games on it that i played when i was a kid.

Greetings, I have been able to successfully install the pocket nester and it seems to be in working order. I now have a problem installing the rom files. It appears the link that has been provided is no longer valid. I enjoy the CABS direct to the phone best and, do not know how to install the zips from other web locations (i.e. PC) finally into phone. Great advice would be nice….
June 8th, 2008 at 10:02 am
BJBuddy,
Not sure what you mean - the link to surrealnetwork’s ROM list is functional. For other NES Rom sites, just Google “NES Roms Download” or something similar.
If you download ROMs to your PC, just copy them to your Smartphone using ActiveSync. If they are ZIP files, unzip them on your PC to that you have the ROM files and then copy those ROM files to your Smartphone from your PC using ActiveSync.

When I click games list link (from my device), I will get the list of games page. BUT when I click the link for the specific game, get an error (Page cannot be found).
I have been able to download a ROM from http://www.theoldcomputer.com. After the files unzipped, I put into random folder, lets say the my video folder under the SGH-i617 documents file, alas, it will not snyc into the phone. I made a seperate folder on the storage card for ROMS but that folder wont show in the SGH-i617 documents on computer. Understanding of media Player sync has been a bit daunting for me, maybe this is what I’m missing.
I also sometimes have been getting in error in SYNC that says something to the effect that I can not sync contacts because a different profile was created with OUTLOOk please choose the right profile and try again. Possibly this is the cause?
June 9th, 2008 at 12:42 am
WOW…that was a lot work…Mission Accomplished..I’ve learned..THANK YOU…. MYBLACKJACK2.com RULES!!!
June 9th, 2008 at 7:59 am
BJBuddy — Ah - I see what the problem is when you try to download the NES ROMs straight to your phone… PocketIE (mobile Internet Explorer) only allows you to download a VERY LIMITED number of file extensions (which is why people were having trouble downloading Theme ZIP files) .. Im guessing PocketIE does not support downloading of .NES files.
In this case you will have to download the .NES files to your PC and transfer them to your phone via ActiveSync.
Instead of using the SYNC option in ActiveSync, I like to: 1) Connect my smartphone to my computer via USB/ActiveSync 2) On my using Windows Explorer navigate to: Computer, open My Computer > Mobile Device > My Windows Mobile-Based Device 3) Select the folder where I want to copy my files to 4) Drag the files from my Computer to the correct folder.
June 9th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

July 8th, 2008 at 9:21 am

July 31st, 2008 at 10:23 am
David…1st let me say that I just picked up my BJII 2 days ago and this site has helped me TONS!!! The iPhone can lick my… well you get the picture. THANX!!!
As for my question - I installed the SNES emulator and it worked perfectly. I was able to install the NES emulator, but for some reason when I go to the file on my storage drive where I loaded my *.nes files, the emulator kicks out and brings me back to the NES screen. I am not even able to open the file with my NES files. I AM able to open my file that has my SNES ROMS..pretty odd. Any advice? Will I have to re-load the NES emulator? Do you know of anyone else with this issue?
Thanks a ton!
July 31st, 2008 at 10:33 am
…ok… I take it back… I was able to open the file fine directly from the folder… this is GREAT!!!
August 9th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
it shows up as a blank black screen. ive tried everything! help?
August 9th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
sophie,
1) How did you application unlock your phone?
2) What kind of phone do you have?
3) Is it displaying a black screen when you first load it? Or after you try to load a ROM?
August 17th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
1) application unlock? maybe thats it because i havent done that…in fact…i dont even know how to be honest. but i have downloaded a lot of other cab files on my phone, too.
2) well, considering this is the blackjack2 website…i think i might have a blackjack 2. lol jk
3) both
August 20th, 2008 at 6:11 am
sophie,
try application unlocking your phone (Hacks & Mods > Application Unlockers) .. I ask about your phone because this post/comment thread is shared out to TheSmartFONE.com since this emulator will work on all WM6 standard smartphones.
August 20th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
yeah, i thought that after i saved my comment. (the phone thing)
ohh, i see. thanks alots!
September 5th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I got the app loaded fine, it reads the roms. The only issue is that once I am in a game I can not get back to the phone, I have to pop the battery to reset. Any ideas?
September 5th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
sjosh,
Sure - figured out what key it bound to the “menu” for the emulator. when you are finished using the emu, tap the menu button which will activate the left and right soft-keys - using the left softkey you will be able to exit the emulator.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Thanks I will give it a try. Is there a typical key that i am using a dash with the 6.1 upgrade
September 5th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
sjosh,
By default it is the “s” key .. you can check it by launching Pocket NES and going to Options > Controllers > Menu, and reseting it there.
September 5th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Thanks, much appreciated
September 6th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
I have WM 6.1. The Emulator works like a charm, the only problem I’ve seen is that only 2 keys work at a time, which makes mario games worthless.
Can’t run and jump at the same time. I guess you can’t have everything!
September 17th, 2008 at 10:03 am
The emulator works on my BJ2 but seriously slows down when there’s a lot of stuff happening in the game. Does anyone else encounter this problem? Is there a setting that will address this?
September 22nd, 2008 at 9:38 pm
There is this error when I open some roms ” Can not open or Mapper not support.” At first I thought I didn’t install everything but some roms are okay while some, especially the ones I really want, don’t show. What can I do?
September 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
lovedustbunnie, I think all you can do it look for different ROMs of the game and hope they work. im not a ROM expert so i dont really know the differences between different ROMs - so thats the best i can offer :T
October 9th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
I’m in the same boat Sadistic, I haven’t upgraded to WM 6.1 yet, but I can’t press more than two buttons at a time without losing the functionality of one of them. Anyone have any suggestions or clues as to why this may be happening, or are we just stuck playing really easy two button NES games?
October 17th, 2008 at 7:09 am
is there anyway i can adjust the sound? its really loud lol. can anybody help me. Thanks
October 17th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
ilikebj2,
I believe you can adjust the sound using your “Earpiece volume” control on your phone. Turn it all the way down to mute the sound.
November 15th, 2008 at 10:36 am
