How does this sync? Does it require a data plan?

kidquick - Yes - this requires a data plan. If you dont have unlimited data i highly suggest you install MoDaCo No Data so you dont accidently use Data when trying out different applications.
If an application has to go out onto the internet to get information, its going to be using data. (Google products are all internet based)
